May Day: The Power We Build Together

Brothers and Sisters,

May Day is rooted in history and sacrifice, but more than anything, it is about power. The power we build when we stand together.

This movement was born here in the United States, on the streets of Chicago at Haymarket Square in 1886. Workers demanded something simple but life changing, an eight hour day. They faced violence, intimidation, and uncertainty, but they stood strong together and changed the future for generations that followed.

That same spirit lives on today.

Across the United States and Canada, Laborers are rising. Through Laborers Rising and our March to One Million members, we are growing our union, strengthening our voice, and securing real opportunities for working families. Every jobsite, every apprenticeship, every organized worker moves us forward.

But let’s be clear, what we have was never given, and it can be taken if we don’t stay ready.

The right to a safe job. Fair wages. Strong benefits. A secure retirement. These are the results of workers standing shoulder to shoulder and demanding better. And today, those gains are being challenged in ways that demand our attention and our action.

May Day reminds us that progress only happens when workers refuse to back down. It reminds us that solidarity is not just a word, it is how we win.

So as we honor those who came before us, we recommit to the work ahead. We organize. We grow. We fight for each other. Laborer to Laborer. Because when we stand together, there is nothing we cannot build.

Happy May Day. Keep the power of solidarity alive.

Fraternally yours,

Brent Booker

General President
